Love Potion #9

I watched Smokey Joe's Cafe ( I don't know what that is) the other night....

SMOKEY JOE\'s CAFE Pictures, Images and Photos

Love it! I don't think I've made a post about it yet....
but I think I'm going to "showcase" some of my favorite songs...

Love Potion #9
is pretty much my favorites song from the revue, its the one always stuck in my head...

It's basically a story of the a guy who goes to a gypsy who gives him a love potion, but it doesn't turn out too well....

Lyrics

I took my troubles down to Madame Rue
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine

I told her that I was a flop with chicks
I've been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign
She said "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine"

She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink"
It smelled like turpentine, it looked like Indian ink
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink

I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine

------ guitar solo ------

I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink

I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
Love Potion Number Nine
Love Potion Number Nine
Love Potion Number Nine

Here's the video from Broadway Show (..it's the second song for all you slow people out there)

what I love about this version is the dance moves, which I saw back on some video are based off various male 60's group dance moves (Like the Temptation & others).

Here's it done by the Searchers(number one hit back in 1965)

Def Not as soulful, but I love it also. This song sounds like a total hit though, right?

The Searchers "stole" it from the Clovers, the original recorders of the song

sounds more like the Smokey Joe's Version...

Also done by the Coasters, who sung many of the songs in Smokey Joe's Cafe...

oh this is different, kinda hot.and funky....whew.....SERVE IT UP!....AND DRINK IT DOWN!

(list of people who did this song...)

This is kool though, seeing how a song changes, the history of a song....
Next song I'll do--??, I don't know....
but stay tuned (I'M TALKING TO YOU!!!)

PEACE & CHICKEN GREASE!!
